Stereo mastering and stem mastering are two different approaches to the mastering process in audio production.
Stereo mastering involves working with a stereo mixdown of the final mix.
This is the most common approach to mastering and is suitable for most music genres.
On the other hand, stem mastering involves working with multiple stems or submixes of the final mix.
Typically, these stems are grouped by instrument or sound source, such as drums, bass, vocals, and so on.
The main difference between stereo mastering and stem mastering is the level of control over the mix that the mastering engineer has.
With stereo mastering, the engineer is limited to processing the overall stereo mix.
With stem mastering, the engineer can process individual stems separately, allowing for more precise control over the final sound.
However, stem mastering requires more time and attention than stereo mastering, as the engineer has to work with multiple stems instead of just one stereo mix.
